Eliminating the words “small business” out of our vocabulary

I’ve always thought it bizarre that we have the term “small business” in our vocabulary.

The words we use are powerful because they carry energy with them. They concentrate energy on one particular point. They disseminate energy. And what we focus our energy on, grows. So, it’s important to speak words that describe what we want to have more of, what we want to create more of in our lives.

But does the word “small” describe something people want more of in their lives? Does anybody wake up in the morning thinking...

“Today I want to feel small. I don’t want to grow, not one tiny bit. I want to remain as small as yesterday. I want my business to stay small. In fact, if I could shrink it into even more smallness, that would be even better. Thank you, my dear angels, for helping me and my business stay small and stagnant.”

Nobody wants their business to shrink up and die.

So why use the word “small” to describe yourself?

Yes, it’s a word used often and everywhere. You’ve probably heard things like “celebrate small business day”, “shop small” and “support small business owners”.

We don’t question this word because it’s commonly used.

But I encourage you to start questioning using this word.

It doesn’t feel good to me to hear people describe themselves in this way. When I look at them, I see powerful, big, intelligent, and creative human beings. I see endless possibilities and unlimited potential. They say “I’m small”, but I think “No. You’re big.”

You’re big because you have dreams about making people’s lives better. You’re big because you care about your community. You’re big because you understand that business is not just about cashing money in, but also about compassion, unity, and connection. You’re a new breed of business owner, and your example will help take the entire business ecosystem to the next level in its evolution. Your “small” business makes a big impact. So, is your business “small” then? No, I don’t think so.

Instead of saying you have a “small business”, you can say you have a...
“Growing business”

“Peaceful business”

“Calm business”

“Friendly business”

Or, you can simply say… “I’m a business owner.” After all, the size of your business is not anybody else’s business but yours.
